About the Spartans
Spartans Wrestling Club is a Philadelphia-based adult recreational club that meets once a week to train and practice freestyle wrestling (though participants with Folkstyle or Greco experience are also very welcome). Started in 1991, the club is open to adult members of all skill levels, and was founded to be especially welcoming of LGBTQ+ wrestlers.

Meet the Club
Gus Scheerbaum is a longtime veteran of the Spartans, and a fellow inductee of Don Jung Hall of Merit. He recently traveled to the 2026 Gay Games in Valencia, Spain and was part of the team running the wrestling tables.

Michael LoFurno is the club director for the Philadelphia Spartans. A 30+ year veteran of the sport, he has competed at several Gay Games and was integral in the club's founding. He is an inductee of the WWB Don Jung Hall of Merit for his contributions to the sport.

Chris Lorefice is the lead coach for the Philadelphia Spartans. He has competed at several Gay Games, and is the namesake of the Lorefice Tournament at the annual Sin City Classic in Las Vegas.
